Goal setting is something that every business owner or career driven individual should incorporate in their lives. We don’t realise how much we actually achieve everyday because we tend to misplace importance of certain activites. Every morning, the people who are actually blessed enough to wake up and get out of bed fail to realise that this is a sort of an achievement in itself. This is because you have made the conscious decission of getting out of bed to make something happen for yourself on yet another day of your life. Arriving at work just as your shift begins is another victory that you can tick off your list for the day. Unfortunately, due to the fact that these are daily routines, people no longer see them as accomplishments; but on a smaller scale they are. The desire to make money most probably is what gets you going to work everyday. Because you are driven by the fact that by working you will earn money, therefore the cause is lead by the effect. Goal setting is all about setting objectives to achieve the outcomes you desire to manifest in your life. As we already established above, everybody can actually set and achieve goals, but let’s look at the bigger picture, where you set individual targets to meet your unique needs. To live a purposeful life, you need to look at your own needs, because this is what is going to make you take things one step further, get out of your comfort zone and strive for greatness.
The most important part of goal setting is establishing what is is that you really want to achieve. Always have in your mind that every action has a reaction and you need to set out te correct one to be followed by your desired reaction. First, you need to understand that your goal needs to be accurate and reliable, and of course completely realistic. For example, saying “I want to be more productive” is not a specific goal, but instead it is a state of being, a characteristic you are simply striving for. Brainstorm this further and ask yourself what is it about being productive that you want to achieve and why do you want to be more productive? Do you want to tick 5 things of your to do list everyday? Do you want to become great at presentations during business meetings? Are you looking at taking on a course to develop your management skills? You have to be as specific as possible. Having a clear vision towards your desired outcome is the fuel that drives you towards it.
MAP IT OUT
Once you have established what your goal is, you need to move forward with a strategic plan on how to make this happen. What must you do in order to get from A (your current state) to B (your desired destination)? Do you need to start creating to do lists? Do you need to sign up to a series of useful webinars? What are the skills you need to work on to take you to where you want to be? Identify all the steps that will bring you to the finish line. If you are in panic and feel stuck, search for somebody who has already done it. If you know somebody like this, get in touch with them; if you don’t, get online and search for a public figure or influencer who has already walked the path you want to take. Do plenty of research and study what they did to get to where they are. When we feel uninspired, the easiest way to combat this is to look outside of our own box/mind and seek further motivation. One important detail to always remember is that you have to be consistent, as very rarely success happens overnight.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
At first, this may be very hard, but if you have taken the above steps to learn more about your journey towards your success, then you should have an idea on timing. Set a deadline of when it is you want to obtain your goal. Sometimes, certain goals we strive towards do already have a deadline, such as marathons, company presentations, award dinners etc. They have a specific date which you have to attend by. But if your goal is to start your own business for example, or sell your first product, you need to make the work and set yourself a “complete by” process. Looking at all the skills you will have to gain and the steps you need to take, calculate in your mind how long roughly will this take? When would you be able to finish all the above and would be ready to achieve it all by? If you still can’t figure it out, using universal calendar dates such as your birthday, Christmas, New Years, bank holiday weekends etc might motivate you further.
BE IN CONTROL
The most important thing by far in goal setting and victory is that you need to be in control of the outcome. There is absolutely no point setting a goal which requires an external input from somebody else. Why? Simply because you cannot control their decisions, time, thought process, etc. So, to achieve something, you must be in control of it 100%, at all times. That way, you are only depending on yourself to make things happen. You don’t have the time or the right to involve somebody in your own desires. To get what you want, you have to be the only one who can make it happen for yourself. So, if you say “I want work for a specific company”, you have to ask yourself: Am I 100% responsible for making this happen or would I need to rely on another person’s decision towards it? What role do I want to have in this company and do I have the necessary qualifications for it? If there is somebody else involved in the outcome of your goal, change it so that it becomes in your domination. Only you can discipline yourself towards your desired outcome. Looking at the above goal, you will probably have to rely on somebody to hire you. Are you the right fit for the company? Do you have the necessary skills to work there? Are you in an environment that allows you to work for this company- or are they in a different city/country? Do they have a position available for the role you want? So instead, you could say “I want to gain the skills required to become a financial director (for example, here you would put the role you want). See how it changes? Now you are responsible and have a clear vision of what you need to get done for making it possible.
BRING YOUR GOAL TO LIFE
It is not enough to tell yourself what you want. As with everything else in life, practice makes perfect (well that’s the saying although perfection cannot be truly measured therefore it does not exist). Ask yourself what will you feel once you accomplish your goal? Where will you be? Who will you be with? How will this impact your life? Give yourself the fairness of actually living as if this has already happened so that you are aware of what it will be like when it does happen. The unconscious mind works in miraculous ways so visualising it all before it happens, helps your brain identify it when it does. Something that really helps is writing your goals down and every morning, when you wake up before you do anything else, take your list and read each goal out loud. Write the goals as they have already happened so that your brain starts to believe it. Do this every morning until it is so fixed in your mind that you know 100% that you are going to get there by your deadline.
And remember, everything you want is within your reach. You just need a really good strategy behind it and a lot of hard work to make it happen.
